Walter Comanitz

March 11, 1946 — November 24, 2024

Sebring

Walter Comanitz, a beloved figure in the community of Sebring, passed away suddenly at home, the Sebring Manor, on November 24, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on March 11, 1946, Walter dedicated his life to making a positive impact on those around him especially those with four paws.

Walter served as an Assistant Juvenile Prosecutor in Summit County, where his intelligence and steadfast character were evident. His education at the Law School at the University of Akron laid the foundation for a career that he decided to leave for a simpler form of life. He was a very proud man and never wanted much. He would often turn down anything offered to him. Walter was preceded in death by his beagle; Brownie which he loved deeply. He is survived by his beloved cats, all the animals he cared about, and many supporters.

Walter was known for his quiet demeanor, Walter possessed a gentle yet stubborn spirit, which left him a mystery to some. The villagers of Sebring knew him as the man who could always be seen walking the streets with Dollar General bags full of cat food. His feeding of cats got Walter in some legal troubles with the Village, but community members of the Village rallied behind him and gave him support in times of trouble and even paid his fines. Members would also give him money to buy cat food as Walter spent almost all of his income on buying cat food.  He frequented several local businesses such as the Log Cabin, the Dollar General, JP's, Panda Garden and Oregon Pub. Walter was a creature of habit often showing up and ordering the same food weekly such as a fish sandwich and fries or listening to Creedance Clearwater Revival on the jukebox.

Walter's love for animals, particularly cats, was profound and unwavering. He would often walk the village, making sure that stray cats had food and care, showing his incredible compassion for all living beings. In doing so, he etched his kindness into the hearts of many, reminding us of the importance of looking after those who cannot care for themselves. His acts of charity towards the strays not only highlighted his heart but also the values he stood for—compassion, empathy, and a commitment to making the world a better place. He would complete his feeding rounds throughout the village and return to the community room at the Sebring Manor for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some quiet time with the tv.

As we remember Walter, we celebrate a life that blossomed in service to others, a man who found joy in simple pleasures, and who leaves behind a legacy of kindness and devotion. His presence will be sorely missed in Sebring, where his contributions to the animals in the community have left a lasting imprint. Walter Comanitz's journey may have ended, but the spirit of generosity and care he embodied will continue to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Harvesting Hope in Your Community believes every life has value and should be celebrated. The Community meal this month will honor and celebrate both Lonna Roberts and Walter Comanitz. In Walter's memory we will be collecting animal food to place in donation boxes for community members needing extra support feeding their fur babies. Join us December 29th from 12-2pm at Almost Home. Arrangements are entrusted to Dean's Funeral Home.
